In the industry as a Construction Cost Consultant or Commercial Manager, their role is to keep a close eye on project finances and contractual relationships. They make sure that the financial position of construction projects is accurately reported and controlled effectively.A student completing the Quantity Survey & Estimating program will:
Recognize the value of the cost estimating process phase in the construction project life-cycle; from the decision to bid a construction building project; to preparing a bid proposal; to being awarded the contract and justifying value to the Owner.
Identify the importance of the cost estimate to devise the basis to create a plan for a construction project management implementation capability once awarded the project through the bidding and negotiation cycle.
State and identify various scopes of work among the differing construction trades and activities; to have the ability to survey ‘blueprints’ and calculate material quantities; to evaluate and estimate labor & equipment; and demonstrate a working knowledge of the CSI MasterFormat coding system.
Define and explain the importance of working on an estimating team and model the value of teamwork in a bidding environment.A Quantity Surveyor is involved in a construction project from inception to completion and even demolition in some instances. Using numeracy, analytical and communication skills the QS provides the financial, contractual and management input to construction projects.
The main focus for a quantity surveyor is to ensure any project remains within budget, providing the client with value for money. Working with clients, other Built Environment professionals, construction teams, legal and financial accounting experts the QS of today requires excellent communication skills to work effectively at all levels of the industry.The objective of the quantity surveying undergraduate degree programme is to provide students with a sound theoretical and practical base to enable them measure, value, cost and specify construction resources, and to become active players in the rational identification, utilization and control of resources within the construction industry.
Graduates of this programme are expected to gain employment in both the private and public sector. The major input of the revised programme is to train quantity surveyors with sufficient skills for the public and private sectors: government ministries, local authorities, departments and parastatals, construction firms, and private consultancy firms offering quantity surveying services
