On completion of this course, participants will be able to undertake the movement of plant and equipment, steel erection, use hoists (including mast climbing hoists), undertake the placement of pre-cast concrete, use safety nets and static lines, install perimeter safety screens, shutters and cantilevered crane-loading platforms. A qualified rigger is defined as a qualified person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, successfully demonstrated the ability to solve/resolve problems relating to rigging. This course brings all of the rigging concerns into focus for a practical, field proven method of ensuring rigging safety. This course offers both practical and theoretical rigging content. You will learn the responsibilities of individuals, the safe use of typical equipment and techniques involved in lifting and rigging safely in the entertainment industry. Participants will obtain the benefit of training in a safe and controlled environment. Course Outline: Current legislation and regulations, including HASAWA, PUWER, LOLER, the Work at Height Regulations and how to carry out risk assessments Working at height including work restraint, work positioning and fall arrest. This is carried out at low level on the practice beam and catenaries, then on beams at height. Principles of lifting and safe systems of work. Marking out. Rigging with a variety of typical rigging equipment including steels, round slings and shackles. Calculating simple bridles and weight distribution relating to bridling. Using trusses correctly, slinging and load distribution. Rigging with a variety of typical rigging equipment including steels, round slings and shackles. Operating chain hoists using direct control and low voltage hoist controllers. Steel wire rope terminations. Pre use checks to lifting equipment and PPE.

Rigging and lifting operations are carried out by riggers and other disciplines including operations technicians, deck crew and drill crew. To ensure these operations can be carried out safely, it is vital that operatives of lifting equipment and accessories for lifting are aware of the safe and correct use of equipment and the probable consequences if safe and best practice is not followed. Taught by an accomplished crane instructor and Rigger Certifier, the Level 1 Rigger Certification Course combines in-class content with practical experience. Students receive classroom theory and hands on practical training including calculating load weights, finding load center of gravity, rigging loads and making actual crane lifts giving direction to the crane operator. The goal of the Level 1 training program is to equip you for a safe career as a knowledgeable and confident rigger. This course is designed to familiarize workers with basic Rigging and Slinging concepts, the proper uses of slings and associated rigging equipment as well as the proper pre-use inspection procedures for rigging equipment. Safe Rigging Practices as well as load weight estimation and the importance of proper sling angles are also covered in order to give participants the skills needed to safely perform the job of Rigger/Signaler/Banks man. Safe lifting practices and procedures making lifts with cranes as well as manually operated devices will also be demonstrated and practiced. Qualified Rigger Level 2 training provides the knowledge and skills necessary for a person to work as a journeyman level rigger. This course prepares persons to perform rigging calculations and to select and apply rigging for safe controlled load handling. As of November 2010 all “Signal Persons” and “Riggers” must be qualified in accordance with OSHA §1926 Subpart CC.
